Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) is an aromatic tropical grass from India. It is well known as a flavoring ingredient in Indian and Thai cooking.
In India, the grass is used in traditional medicine to help reduce fevers and kill infections, and also as an insect repellent. The leaves are chopped just above ground level and, as with all grasses, new shoots are then produced very quickly.
Safety information: the oil is regarded as a potential irritant to already sensitive or allergic skin and is not advised for infants and young children. It should always be diluted in a carrier, even in bath blends.
Fragrance profile: a very strong, “lemon sherbet” aroma that is zesty and sweet with a slightly heavy undertone.
Main uses: eases muscular aches, pains, and stiffness; eases stomach cramps, indigestion, and constipation; lifts depression or anxiety and improves the mood.
Suggested blends: for muscular aches, add 2 drops lemongrass, 3 drops rosemary, and 5 drops cardamom to 4 teaspoons (20ml) carrier oil to massage the specific areas. For stomach cramps or constipation, add 2 drops lemongrass, 4 drops corianders, and 4 drops nutmeg to 4 teaspoons (20ml) carrier oil and massage the abdomen twice daily. To improve mood and combat stress, add 2 drops lemongrass, 2 drops rose, and 6 drops frankincense to 4 teaspoons (20ml) carrier oil.
