Bergamot is a small bitter orange grown in the Lombardy region of Italy near the town of Bergamo.
The fruit has long been used in the traditional medicine of the area as a remedy for fevers and low immunity. The essential oil from the peel is best known as the flavoring of Earl Grey tea, giving the drink a fresh, citrusy flavor.
Safety information: bergamot is strongly phototoxic; avoid exposing the skin to strong sunlight or sunbeds for at least 12 hours after application. FCF (furano-coumarin free) bergamot oil is available with the phototoxic constituent removed, but the aroma of the oil is much redused.
Fragrance profile: fresh, bright, citrusy, and sweet, developing softer, rounder, and warmer tones later.
Main uses: boosts immunity, helps to combat colds, influenza, and respiratory complaints; eases the symptoms of vaginal thrush; soothes anxiety, depression, helps to lift low spirits, and combat stress.
Suggested blends: to help boost the immune system, add w drops bergamot, w drops tea tree, and 1 drop black pepper to an evening bath and relax in the water; then add the same drops of essential oil to 2 teaspoons (10ml) carrier oil and massage the chest area. For thrush, add 2 drops bergamot and 3 drops sandalwood to a warm bath to soothe the area.
To ease stress and anxiety, vaporize e drops bergamot and 3 drops frankincense to create a warm and uplifting aroma.
