It's that time again. Fall has come in like a roaring lion and for a lot of Americans so has the sneezing, coughing, congestion and pain brought on by painful sinus infections and allergies.
Unfortunately I'm also a card-carrying member of this club.

Not wanting to admit that summer was really at an end, I ignored the first subtle hints of impending sinus issues. When I finally had to admit that it was time to begin my self-treatments I did 2 things.

First, I rinsed out my sinus cavities with a saline solution and my neti pot. This immediately relieved the pressure from across my cheek bones, behind my eyes, the nape of my neck and the pain in my molars (yes, as crazy as that sounds my teeth hurt when my sinuses are acting up).

And second, I fixed myself some ACV. To be exact, I poured about 8 oz. of water into my favorite mug and heated it the same way that I would to steep a tea bag. I added 2 tsps of unfiltered apple cider vinegar with the "Mother" and 2 tsps of honey. The taste really doesn't bother me but then again I love sour pickles and Sweet Tarts. If you suffer the way I do, I'm sure you'll adjust to the taste. Also, I am always careful to use a straw when using this treatment to prevent erosion of my tooth enamel.

It helps not to procrastinate like myself and to treat yourself at the first signs of discomfort. In rare cases, sinus infections have been known to spread to the brain and in a situation like that nothing in your kitchen is going to cure you. For SEVERE sinus infections, get thee to a doctor - STAT!

And while I'm on the subject of apple cider vinegar let me just mention a few other uses for it. In addition to cures for allergies and sinus irritations ACV can also be used for acne, high cholesterol, flu, chronic fatigue, candida, acid reflux, sore throats, contact dermatitis, arthritis, and gout.

Once again a trip to the doctor can be saved simply by checking the kitchen pantry first!
